Park Men’s Volleyball Wins National Championship
They’ve done it, once again! The men’s volleyball team won the NAIA National Invitational Championship last weekend. The tournament took place April 19-22 at Missouri Baptist University in St. Louis.
Park, ranked No. 3 prior to the tournament, beat out the No. 1 seed, Grand View University of Des Moines, Iowa, in the championship match. The Pirates dominated Grand View in three straight sets (36-34, 25-21, 25-16). This is the fifth championship for the men’s volleyball program at Park.
Park head coach Mike Talamantes also won the NAIA Coach of the Year award. This championship is his fourth overall national title as a coach at Park University.
Senior Daniel Arteaga (No. 8) was named the tournament MVP. IN the championship match he completed 29 kills, making his total 444 for the season.
Sophomore Oscar Tuero (No.18) made the All-Tournament Team by averaging 5.6 kills per match throughout the tournament. Other statistical leaders were Murilo Pereira (No. 1) with the highest hitting percentage of .548 and Milos Trivunic (No. 5) with most assists per game, a 12.3 average totaling in 48 for the tournament.
The team finished the season 26-5.
