Women’s volleyball top AMC rankings
As of October 18, Park’s women’s volleyball team is on an 11-game win streak. They sport a 23-2 overall record and are undefeated in the American Midwest Conference while also posting a flawless record at home.
The Pirates’ third win of their unbeaten streak came on September 29 in Walnut Ridge, Ark., against Williams Baptist College. Park swept the Eagles in straight sets and posted a .337 hitting percentage. Junior Danna Gomes recorded 38 of the team’s 45 assists while freshman Noura Meawad led the Pirates with nine kills.
Park tallied their 16th win of the season just 20 hours and 166 miles later with another sweep, this time against AMC opponent Freed-Hardeman University. The Lions failed to hit the 20 point mark in all three sets as Park moved to 5-0 in conference play.
Park finally dropped their first set in five games against Baker University on October 5. After dropping the first set to the Pirates 25-19, Baker caught Park sleeping in the second set to tie the match at one set apiece. The Pirates woke up in the final sets, outhitting Baker by an average of 245 points and improving their win streak to five games.
The Pirates recorded wins number six and seven of their streak on back-to-back days, beginning with Saint Louis College of Pharmacy on October 6. After sweeping the Euts in straight sets, Park traveled to Belleville, Illinois to play Lindenwood University-Belleville on October 7. The Lynx suffered the same fate as Parks last opponent just 21 hours earlier, falling to the Pirates in straight sets.
Six days later, Park competed in the Columbia College Invitational where the Pirates would eventually secure their most impressive win of the season. Park began the tournament on October 13 with a straight-set victory over The Master’s University, giving head coach Mike Talamantes a school record 204th career win. The Pirates’ second victory of the tournament came the next day against Central Methodist University. After taking the first set 25-19, Park squeaked by the Eagles in the final two sets, winning both 25-23.
Park’s 21st victory of the season would set them up with a top 10 opponent in the form of No. 6 Westmont College. The Pirates knocked off the sixth ranked team in the country, dropping just their second set in their last 11 games to move to 22-4 on the season. Park’s victory over the Warriors represented their first victory of the season against a ranked opponent. Three days after their impressive win over Westmont College, Park hosted Stephens College on October 17. The Pirates moved their win streak to 11 with another victory in straight sets over the Stars.
As of October 18, Park sits atop the AMC with a perfect conference record. The Pirates have a pair of top 15 teams nipping at their heels though; No. 10 Missouri Baptist sits just a half game behind Park while No. 13 Columbia College is just one game out. Park has a chance to widen this gap with a matchup against Columbia College on October 19. The Pirates next game will then be against No. 10 Missouri Baptist at the Brecken Sports Center. This two-game stretch is Park’s best opportunity to move up in the national rankings before the AMC tournament on November 7.
