MVP selection should be more than popularity contest
A Most Valuable Player award is given every year to one particular athlete in almost every sport that is regarded in the traditional team format.
The Most Valuable Player of any league is the player that is most valuable to their teams’ success. If you’re producing great statistics as an individual but your team isn’t winning then you’re not valuable. Your team can lose without you.
A valuable player performs at the highest level and is a key to their teams’ success. Not to get it mistaken, they are not the only reason why the team is winning because other players have their roles as well. The MVP does something that stands out to those who are watching and those who choose who should win that award of that particular year.
The value of the player often goes unnoticed. Without them, the team wouldn’t be as successful as if they had the player. That’s a valuable player.
A valuable player is also a great leader of the team. If you could think about anyone in any sport that has ever won an MVP, you might not think about or remember their leadership skills aside from their athletic skills. Most MVPs have an award ceremony and thank their teammates first.
If you think about it, no MVP of a team sport is an MVP without their teammates. Rather than taking all the shine for what they’ve done individually, you give your teammates the glory. Throughout that year, your teammates have made the MVP better in some way.
Winning the award can sometimes be very political and committees often chose the winner. I’m not sure if they always make the right choice. Sometimes, it seems as if they choose based on popularity and what the sports lovers would accept rather than basing the decision off of facts.
This award – at any level – should be given to the best player over a one-year span going off their stats and their teams’ performance. You can’t be MVP if you’re playing amazing but your team is not.
I even feel that the Coach of the Year awards should go to the coach with the best record in the league in one season. It’s about being the best at that time and records show your wins and your losses.
The committees of each and every sport in the world should be less politics and more facts.
