After a rough start to the season, the Park University Women’s Soccer team made this rebuilding year a successful one, finishing second place in the American Midwest Conference.
The team finished the regular season with 8-2 in the American Midwest Conference along with 9-8-1 record overall.
The team began its playoff run in the AMC quarterfinals against the No. 7 ranked Benedictine at Julian Field. Both teams were evenly matched defensively, dragging out the game to two scoreless halves. Heading into overtime a winner still was not declared, so it would be settled in a shootout. Both teams had eight shots, Benedictine made only five goals, which proved to be futile in matching Park’s six to advance to the next round.
Three days later, the team continued it’s playoff run at Julian Field against the No. 6 ranked Lyon in the semifinals. The team didn’t waste anytime getting the game under way as midfielder Emily Key scored within the first two minutes of play. The team managed to hold off Lyon throughout the rest of the first half. The Women kept their lead up in the second half with a goal from midfielder, Caitlin Foreman and two goals from midfielder, Sydney Patterson. The team advanced to the AMC championship after defeating Lyon, 4-0.
The team went out on the road to continue their hunt for the AMC Championship to face the No. 1 ranked Columbia on their home field. Although the team ended up falling short to Columbia, 0-2 and Columbia won the AMC Championship.
Following the championship, five players from the team were named in the AMC Women’s All-Conference team. Shnell Briscoe led Park in scoring with 48 points, 19 goals and 10 assists. Bridget Steiner had the second most points with 39 points, 16 goals and seven assists. Other players that made the conference team were Christina Harold with six points and honorable mentions to Emily Key and Cara Lighte.
Despite losing the championship, this season was the team’s eighth straight winning season.
