Overhead lights, score board and the roar of cheering fans. These are all things you should expect when walking into Breckon Sports Center.
The Park University men’s team is off to a rough start with a 2-4 record following a game against Bethel College. No matter the outcome of the game, Park University is proving to have some of the best fans around.
“As a cheerleader, it’s always a great feeling when you get the crowd involved in the game,” said Mindy McQuerry, freshman. “Not only for our squad, but for the basketball team as well. I’m sure it’s a great feeling for them too to know that they have so many fans cheering them on. I love that everyone is there for the same reason: to watch our loved ones, classmates and friends play a sport they are passionate about. We can all forget about our homework, stress and drama….and just be there to support the team.”
Cheerleaders are not the only ones cheering though. Fellow classmates are also there to do some cheering along with close friends and family.
“Being in the stands is one of the best feelings,” said Kendra Kenney, business administration senior. “Everyone around is just as excited as the next to be watching the game and cheering the entire team on to a victory.”
Cheering the team on also boosts the team’s confidence and helps them feel the support everyone has for them.
“It’s great to see how pumped the team gets when the crowd is going wild because of a great play,” said Kenney.
Against Bethel, Xavielle Brown was once again the leading scorer, dropping 20 points on the Crusaders, followed by Denzelle Cook and Myles Whitehurst both scoring 14.
Defensively the Pirates are currently led by Brown, with 5.20 defensive rebounds a game. Overall the Men rank number eight in the NAIA for assists a game with 19.6.
The men’s basketball team is scheduled to play Tuesday, Nov. 26, at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kan.
