Conformity is a great thing. But like all great things, too much of a great thing can be a bad thing.
I recently caught myself conforming to a group of people almost to the point of losing myself and it was really shocking. I consider myself to be an independent person with my own thoughts, feelings and actions.
But what I didn’t realize was just thinking that of yourself isn’t enough, you need to do things to reinforce those perceptions or you will lose it faster than you can spell Mississippi backwards.
Every day millions of teens, young adults and even “real” adults will do things simply because everyone else is telling them to or doing the same. So you ask, “Why don’t we do what we want instead?”
Well my answer to this is simple. We don’t do what we want because we don’t know it’s not what we really want.
For years now, nature has engrained in all of us a need to be part of the pack, to not stir the boat. But to this I say nature can go stick it where the sun doesn’t shine. I want to be my own person and decide for myself what I want and not some preconceived, caveman-me man, you woman attitude decide for me.
I say break free from the pack and be you and love every minute of it. The stares and whispers you might endure because of it will be well worth it because you’ll be happy. I guess Freddy had it right when he said he wanted to break free.
