Park University appears to be falling apart at the seams these days despite major improvement projects this summer.
The bridge connecting Chesnut Hall and Dearing Hall to the rest of campus is the most obvious example. This bridge has become a hazard to the health of students, staff and faculty who use it due to improper upkeep and untimely repairs. What’s worse, it appears that repairs are only being made to the most broken and rotting wood – instead of the entire bridge.
I understand coming up with funds for repairs on campus takes time, but how and why did the bridge even become this derelict? When I first came to Park in 2009 the bridge was fairly new and under most circumstances shouldn’t have fallen into such disrepair so soon.
Students use this bridge everyday – myself being one of them – and in the last couple years it has seen some very heavy snow and rain.
Temporary fixes are now finally being made after students have complained and one of the wooden boards finally gave out and broke away from the rest of the bridge.
As students, we deserve better from our university. We deserve a campus which is safe and not dated or falling apart. Park’s leaders should foresee damaged or aging property, such as the bridge, and make progress to repair these issues much quicker.
Problems come up every day for people everywhere. But the difference between
it just being a problem and becoming a catastrophe is the how it is dealt with.
We are giving Park University our all while enrolled and living on campus, the least they could do is return the courtesy with the most compliant, clean and safe facilities available.
