Pete Buttigieg, former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, focuses on healthcare, veteran’s affairs and equal justice for all in his campaign to secure the Democratic presidential nomination.
Early life
Buttigieg grew up in South Bend, Indiana, raised by his parents Joseph Buttigieg, a first-generation immigrant from Malta, and Anne Montgomery, a fifth-generation Indiana resident. Buttigieg went to Harvard College for his bachelor’s degree, and Pembroke College, Oxford for a master’s degree.
Political experience
Buttigieg was elected as mayor of South Bend, Indiana in 2011. On Buttigieg’s website, it states he worked to promote a safe and inclusive city for all residents, passing measures such as an identification card for undocumented immigrants. Income increased for residents and unemployment was cut in half, according to Buttigieg’s website. While in office, Buttigieg took a leave of absence during his term to serve in the U.S Navy in Afghanistan.
Current campaign
Buttigieg focuses on veteran’s affairs. He plans to make healthcare more accessible to veterans, including suicide prevention services. He wants to make it easier for military spouses and families to transition back into civilian life. Buttigieg also intends to remove the transgender military ban.
On Buttigieg’s website, he says he wants to serve those who are underserved, such as the LGBTQ+ community, the criminal justice system, lower-class communities and minority groups. Buttigieg plans to pass the Equality Act to ensure LGBTQ+ people are not denied housing or jobs based off their identity. Buttigieg is also proposing criminal justice reforms.
“It is past time to transform the criminal legal system to one that truly promotes justice, and benefits all of us,” Says Buttigieg, on his website.
Buttigieg has also proposed background checks on all gun sales including gun shows and online buys. Buttigieg wants to implement all domestic abusers turning in their guns.
