Work to repair damage at Alumni Hall after a fire Oct. 7 is well underway.
Christopher Loos, director of campus safety, updated the progress being made after the incident that damaged the third floor as well as other areas of the building.
“The fourth floor, the theater lobby and the west stairwell are ready to be used,” he said. “There are classes schedule on the fourth floor and classes can resume.”
According to Loos, the east side of the building is still closed and the only entrance at the moment is the southwest entrance.
Cleaning and repainting are still in process and the theater will be open by Wednesday, Oct. 23, however the theater production’s “Art of Murder” will now take place in the McCoy Meetin’ House.
“There’s a probability of repainting the theater,” said Loos. “So it might take a while but the rest of it the third floor is completely closed off and. There’s no timeline on when they are going to open it back again.”
Campus Safety also released its annual campus security and fire safety report Oct. 1 as required by law. This report shows statistics from previous years and current year on campus security.
Other fires reported in the 2013 campus safety and security report – which occurred in 2012 – were in Chesnut Hall and Dearing Hall.
Other statistics related to the report show one “on-campus property” stalking in 2012; 10 people “referred for disciplinary actions” regarding drug abuse violations in 2011, and five people “referred for disciplinary actions” regarding liquor law violations in 2011 and seven people in 2012.
“It depends on who catches those things,” said Loos. “Residence Life is train so they can handle those situations on their own, and when we get our reports together we get the statistics from residence life as well as all the campus centers.”
According to Loos, reports from Residence Life and Campus Safety are shared and put into statistics on a weekly basis.
Loos explained the process when action has to be taken.
“We make a report on it we would identify the people that are involved and then we would go to a judicial process,” he said. “So if someone has to go and see Jamie Uden up in judicial because of alcohol on campus then he would have to go through his process and see if he is found responsible or not.”
Residence Life, Campus Safety and Student Life are some of the departments working together and sharing information necessary for the statistics to be accurate.
“So we have a report, we have pictures or videos, we investigate and we share it with Jamie Uden,” said Loos. “ And he’ll do his side of it the judicial part. From our (campus safety) standpoint, we write a report of what we find and pass it on.”
