Money can be stressful topic for college students. For those students who don’t understand or how to manage their finances, a new class that will help students in those areas is being offered on campus.
The Dave Ramsey Foundations in Personal Finance class is being offered to students who are worried about their finances. The class began Sept. 27 and will conclude Nov. 22.
A five-chapter course is taken over a ten-week period where students learn about budgeting, financial aid, savings and managing their money. The program was introduced after students completed an end-of-the-year survey where 47 percent of students said that financial stress was their main source of worry.
The class also includes video, a workbook and a case study but the main chunk of the class is video and dialogue.
“It’s meant to not feel stressed but in control of your money,” Ben Dewberry, director of Office of Residence Life and Education, who facilitates the class along with Valerie Jones and Sam Taibi.
A goal of the class is to have a sense of empowerment and to have a plan after college and to steer students away from credit card debt.
Student Adam Richardson said he understands at least 90 percent of his finances.
“There’s always something to learn,” said Richardson, who is still learning about his 401k and how it works.
Richardson said understanding his finances have prepared him for the real world but his finances have caused him some stress as well. He said being laid off from two jobs and now having a part-time job and barely getting by.
