Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce’s homes were broken into just a day apart.
On Saturday, Oct. 5, 2024, Kelce’s neighbor’s home was burglarized while they were not home. It was reported that $500,000 worth of jewelry and a safe with two guns inside were stolen. This was just a day before Mahomes’ and two days before Kelce’s homes were burglarized.
Mahomes’ house, located on an 8-acre piece of land in Loch Lloyd, Mo., on the state line between Missouri and Kansas, was broken into on Sunday, Oct. 6. He and his wife Brittney Mahomes built what many call a “compound”. The land was purchased in 2020, and in 2021, the couple built their home, later adding a pool, a 40-yard football/soccer field, and a private lake.
Mahomes made a comment about the burglary during a press conference after the Buffalo Bills game. He said, “Obviously, it’s frustrating and disappointing”. Mahomes had hundreds of thousands of dollars in jewelry stolen from his home.
On Monday, Oct. 7 Kelce’s house was broken into while the Chiefs were playing against the Saints. Kelce lives in a secluded gated community in Leawood, Kan., in a 17,000-square-foot mansion that is worth around $6 million. The home has a pool, full bar, and wine cellar. Kelce moved to this estate because of the paparazzi at his previous home, after it was announced he was in a relationship with Taylor Swift.
Kelce has yet to comment on the situation. But according to the police report, Kelce’s burglary wasn’t reported until the next day. In the report, it described $20,000 in cash was stolen and a rear door was damaged.
On the police reports that were made for each burglary, neither Mahomes or Kelce’s name were listed on them. Not many comments were made by investigators and the athletes because it is still an ongoing investigation. The only statement released by the Leawood Police Department so far is, “The Leawood Police Department follows up on all investigative leads, works with victims to solve open cases, and asks the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity. Leawood is consistently one of the safest cities in Kansas, and our officers provide daily patrols to ensure that safety is maintained.”
It is suspected that the three cases are linked to a transnational crime ring that is targeting athletes during game-time, when players aren’t home. Both the NFL and NBA have issued a security alert to the players’ unions and team security directors.
