It was quite the show. On Sept. 6, 2024, my fiancée and I saw one of our favorite bands on their final tour. It was Jeff Lynne’s Electric Light Orchestra (ELO). The “Over and Out Tour” was a greatest hits, visual spectacle.
The tour began on Aug. 24, 2024, in Palm Desert, CA., and will end on Oct. 25 in Los Angeles. The band has been around for 54 years, beginning in Birmingham, England, in 1970. Created by Jeff Lynne, Roy Wood, and Bev Bevan, the band has achieved a lot of success and been through the ringer. This incarnation of ELO, called Jeff Lynne’s ELO for legal reasons, has all new members except for Lynne.
“It was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen,” said Ashlyn Weber, ’19. Weber has been a fan of ELO since childhood. Her father introduced her to the band through songs like “Telephone Line” and “Don’t Bring Me Down.” I had always been aware of the band’s songs, though not by name, until Weber inundated me with their magical music on long car rides. Songs like “Last Train to London” and “Rockaria!” really resonated with me.
Their music strikes a special balance of unique instrumentation and catchy lyrics. My typical playlist from the ’70s consists of Black Sabbath and AC/DC, while Weber’s has more friendly bands like The Doors and performers like Glen Campbell. But ELO manages to meld our tastes through their command of melody and lyricism.
The concert itself was well worth the trip to St. Louis and the admission cost. “There was very little gap between songs,” said Weber. “They would transition into the next song in about a minute.” This pace was helpful since neither she nor I enjoy incomprehensible one-way conversations with elderly music artists. At the last concert we attended, Alabama at the State Fair, the lead singer babbled in a way that combined a strong Southern accent with the slurring of a man who had recently suffered a stroke. Lynne, on the other hand, was much more understandable and seemed to really just want to play his music.
That said, it was apparent that it was time for Lynne to retire. At least twice during the concert, Lynne was singing off beat, and I’m not entirely convinced that his guitar was plugged in. It was so bad at one point that another member had to step in to sing for Lynne, who couldn’t keep up with the tempo of the song. That said, “Even with Jeff Lynne being aged and visibly exhausted, they captured the essence of the original recordings,” said Weber.
All in all, the concert was amazing. Knowing a playlist so well you can sing every song with the crowd is an experience like no other. If you haven’t heard of ELO, I recommend listening to “Evil Woman,” “Mr. Blue Sky,” and “Strange Magic.”

My wife and I went to Cincinnati on September 13. It was the third time I had been to see ELO. Although as stated, Jeff Lynne appeared to show his age, but the music was awesome. I have never heard anyone else that blends the different instruments and styles of vocals like Jeff Lynne does. Absolutely fantastic!

FYI – Tour started in Palm Desert CA on August 24th. Otherwise, the review was spot on. I was there for the opener and it was absolutely awesome.

I saw ELO’s music and terrific light show in Portland Oregon a couple of yrs ago. I was stunned to see them in Hyde park on TV after seeing their last ELO concert over 3 decades before. I called my former musical 🎼 date ex wife in fla. and offered to fly her here and back to attend the show. She declined so I took my son (accomplished musician) and his girl to a “Rock Concert”
It turned out better than I ever would have imagined. We had been apart for 40yrs. I credit Jeff Lynne’s music and ELO both old and new for a musical foundation between my son and I. The bridge that grew there is priceless.
I always dreamed about doing this in person but if this remains the best opportunity I’ll ever get. Thank you Jeff Lynne for a half century of sharing your talent, live and in person more times than any band I have ever heard. We are both old men now. The torch always gets passed so I’ll take the countless memories with me to my grave.
Perhaps I’ll have them play ” Turn to stone!” 😀

Saw them last month(Sept) in Madison Square Garden, NYC . I have to say. I’ve been to over 30 concerts this year. And this was in the Top 3 . They sounded incredible.

Actually, the tour began at the Acrisure Arena, in Palm Springs, California, August 24, 2024. It was a fabulous opening night and we would have loved to have seen this show again before the tour is over. Thank you Jeff Lynn and ELO for the best concert experience we have seen in a very long time! Over and Out! …Or is it? 🤔 🙌🏽😎👏🏼

Nice article Damon. We saw them in St. Paul last week and I agree with your assessment. Great music, great supporting band, Jeff has his best days behind him, but it was a magical experience nonetheless. I was there with my father (88) and my two sons (21 and 25) who, like your girlfriend, feel their music is the soundtrack of their childhood.
Just a quick correction: their first concert was in Palm Desert, CA not Palm Springs, FL.

ELO has always been my favorite group since the 80’s! I love them and I always will. We listen to the CDs when we’re driving our car, we listen to them on the TV while I’m cooking or while I’m washing and drying dishes. They are a Daily part of my life, I will still be constantly listening to them I’m sure for the rest of my life. I am 72 and my husband is 83 and ELO has been our favorite group. We got married when I was 22 and he was 33, we have been married 50 years and ELO Has been with us on many road trips by radio or CD forever. My husband was a DJ for many years and he was a record collector and he always had ELO in his collection. All our love always to the fantastic, outstanding group ELO.🥰

Got to see them in Pittsburgh September 10 after debating, do I want to spend that kind of $$$ or not . My wife ( not much of a fan ) & I were so glad we took it in . I saw them open for Jethro Tull wayyy back & have followed Jeff’s career ever since, Amazing Artist . I can’t tell you how grateful I am that I got off that stupid money and pushed the button . “Turned to Stone “ alone was worth the price of admission. All the Artists-Musicians were note worthy. Thanks to the Band for such great memories!!

I don’t what happened in Seattle….. I haven’t heard if he was intoxicated, pain meds….. not sure, but I was so disappointed. The first 4 songs were horrible. Thankfully, he came around, an thankfully for the back-up vocals & ochestra – they saved him that night. The first concert I have contemplated walking out of. Exiting the concert everyone was talking about it from the venue all the way to the parking garage. I’ve seen others posting live clips – so much better than what we got.
I saw him a couple years ago in Nashville & he was phenomenal!! Due to a pre-planned vacation, I’m not able to see him anywhere close to me, because I would be willing to see if there was a redeeming show. I’m from Alabama & made special arrangements to see him in Seattle.
Really curious if anyone has heard anything as to what the problem was.

Sad. I’m sure he knew it was time to wrap it up at least while he can still do it. God bless him, he is SO talented. Saw him in Pittsburgh, Pa in Sept. Thrilled to have seen him one more time. Rock on Jeff!!!!

Add “One Summer Dream” to that list and you will have a sublime ELO experience

I saw ELO in Boston and never was Jeff Lynne off in his vocals or his playing. My husband has been a musician for 36 years and Jeff’s guitar was definitely plugged in.

You will be missed.

Saw them in August in PA. I felt like a teenager once again, which was many, many years ago. The show was outrageous. Beside all grey headed people there it was so nice to see younger generations enjoying the music.

Dani Hollins • Oct 5, 2024 at 8:41 am
Farewell Electric Light Orchestra. You will be forever remembered.

I was never fortunate enough to see ELO perform until their final tour.
Not only was I fortunate enough to see them play once, I was fortunate enough to see them play twice!!
The performances they put on were by far the best concerts I’ve ever seen!!
I made a commitment to myself, if I was able to get through chemo and radiation, one thing I was going to do – go see Electric Light Orchestra perform!! Certainly something I will never forget. I only wish and hope that Mr. Lynne has the energy and ability to put on one more tour in the USA!!
