The student-run Park University 90.5 KGSP Pirate Radio station has a little something for everyone from music to information about what’s happening on campus and in the Parkville area.
Student and DJ Denzel Cook plays music most of the time and talks about what is going on in the Parkville area and on campus.
Cook says he enjoys doing radio because he’s all by himself.
“I’m by myself and there is nobody but me,” said Cook.
When Senior DJ Brandon McKenzie is on the air, he plays music but also does a “Today in Music History” segment. McKenzie volunteered at the radio station last semester now doing it two days a week as part of the class. He said he has a love for music.
“I have a wide background in music and enjoy listening to newly released music,” McKenzie said.
Looking to get involved at Park, DJ Grant Malone joined the radio station team in the spring of 2012. Malone said he enjoys music and playing people’s favorite music.
“I love music and love all types,” said Malone.
He says at first he thought he couldn’t do it and is getting better as time goes on but he still gets nervous.
“Had a phobia about talking into a microphone,” he said.
Even though the radio station is fun there is a lesson that needs to be learned.
“I want them to learn about a professional radio station and operate in a professional way,” said Steven Youngblood, KGSP general manager and associate professor of communications.
