Chilling winds biting noses as the sun parts the clouds to have its rays dance through the rows upon rows of farmland goodies is what many people in Kansas City have come to know as the City Market.
The City Market, located at 20 West 5th Street in Downtown Kansas City, provides city-dwellers the chance to purchase homegrown products at decent prices every Saturday and Sunday.
Many Park students are market-goers. Manda Riley, a sophomore majoring in social work, said that she and her husband go every weekend.
“We absolutely love the city market,” she said. “It is a beautiful combination of culture, food, musicians and local business.”
Riley said they love trying the different kinds of food while shopping.
“We have gotten many delicious treats from baklava to eggrolls, and each experience becomes that much more special,” she said.
Going to the City Market is a good way to stay under budget. You can go to the market with just a $10 and literally come home with armful of bags of produce, spices and other goodies.
Katie Overholtzer, a junior communications major, said that she loves going to the market but doesn’t utilize it as much as she should.
“I spend about $10 to $15 depending on what I’m in the mood to buy,” she said. “I’d say you defiantly get your money’s worthwhile being able to help out local farmers. I like the market not only as it’s a perfect venue for people watching but also because it’s a lovely way to start off the weekend.”
Coffee beans from the café and spices from the seasoning vendor mingle in the air to make a fragrant scent that makes you feel as if you are in a safe haven.
Every other weekend vendors set up a community garage sale of sorts. Brandis Outlaw, junior communications major, said she loves going to the City Market because of many different trinkets.
“I like it because of the diversity and how it just feels and sounds like an entire different world,” Outlaw said. “Also because when you buy some merchandise they can be some items you really can’t get anywhere else.”
From the shopping of produce to the scents of spices to the local musicians’ tunes carrying over the whole bazaar, the City Market is a place where you can experience all of Kansas City in one day.
