Fright Night event scares, delights trick-or-treaters
From ghouls to goblins, participants in Park’s annual Fright Night last week had their fill of tricks and treats.
The Office of Student Life, Residence Hall Council and Park Student Government Association hosted the event the evening of Oct. 30 on Park University’s Parkville campus.
Residents of Copley Quad dormitory, along with their resident advisors, decorated their floors prior to the event. During Fright Night, children ages 4 to 12 had the opportunity to tour Copley Quad to trick-or-treat at each door. The higher the floor, the scarier the decor and costumes became.
Two female residents of the fourth floor were dressed in white dresses with their hair tied in pig tails singing songs from the movie “The Shining” and whispered creepy things when children passed by.
“It was a lot of fun,” said Emily Watts, sophomore in elementary education. “The kids were scared.”
Watts was proud she and her roommate and cousin, Allisson Hataway, succeeded in scaring kids.
Trick-or-treating wasn’t the only activity. Tables filled the entire outdoors space with games and activities for children. Each booth was represented by one of Park’s club organizations.
Clubs organized for weeks in order to prepare for this event. The Park Student Government Association booth had a glow stick ring toss. Chemistry Club members had children spin a stick over a glass filled with water, and the water would change color as the stick was spinning.
Fright Night ended for the kids at 8 p.m., but the festivities did not end for all the volunteers. PSGA senators set up a bonfire and volunteers gathered around the fire to warm up and roast s’mores. Pizza and hot chocolate were also part of the night.
“Fright Night was a success,” said Nora Gedi, Student Program Specialist. “It was the first time we had it on a Thursday and that did not seem to be a problem for families to come up and enjoy a spooky event.”
Gedei wants to thank all the club members and volunteers for their efforts at this event.
Residential Hall Council President Ayla Paharm, junior, turned off the lights in the lobby of Copley at 8:30 p.m. and music started playing. Students danced all night.
The vast majority of students, faculty and staff did not hesitate to wear a costume and makeup.
“It was very exciting to see how involved students were with the event,” said Jeremy Barnes, President of PSGA. “Having all the clubs active at the event has to make Fright Night one of the most unique events of the year.”
